Students welcome Bangkok Asylum Access for ‘funday’

Report by Emma Marsh and the Sixth Form Team

Community action is an aspect of life at Bangkok Prep that sometimes goes on in the background but always adds to the embodiment of our life values.

Our students work with an organisation called Asylum Access who “aim to transform the human rights landscape for refugees in countries of refuge”. Thailand does not have a national asylum system and generally considers asylum seekers and refugees to be illegal migrants.

The refugees are routinely denied fundamental rights including legal status, freedom from detention and deportation, access to safe and lawful employment, and equal protection of the law.

Throughout the entire year, as part of the integration program for refugees, Sixth Form students from Bangkok Prep have been preparing and teaching English-medium Maths, English, Art and P.E. for four hours every week.

By delivering these lessons the Sixth Form students are supporting the academic development of the refugee community and also promoting positive relationships between the school and asylum-seeking community. Students were keen to end their work this term with a ‘Community Funday’ that all the refugee families could enjoy.

On Saturday 20 May our students welcomed ten families from the ‘Bangkok Asylum Access’ charity into our school for a community ‘fun-day’.

Teachers and students from Bangkok Prep organised activities that the community members would not ordinarily have the opportunity to try out. Throughout the morning there was a cooking class, art and crafts, playdough fun, mandala making, science experiments in the laboratory and lots of fun in the swimming pool. The day was rounded off with a fantastic sausage sizzle barbecue!

Special thanks must go to some of our fabulous students for joining in whole-heartedly with the day and really helping the children enjoy themselves. They were Josh, Lua, Divya, Vichu, Sulyna, and Utkarsh from Year 12, Punn and Krit from Year 13 and Lily from Year 7.

All the children and the adults had a really good day and enjoyed all the different activities – so much so that we are planning another one for next term!

If you would like to support our Prep students in their ongoing community work with ‘Asylum Access’ we are currently collecting small cartons of long-life milk and donations of used clothes and toys to give to the children in the asylum-seeking community.

Please bring them into the Sixth Form centre if you feel you would like to help out. We would be very grateful for any donations.
