Student book wins first place at Young Writers Awards

In December 2016 Neilson Hays Library launched its inaugural ‘Young Writers Awards’ by inviting students aged 10-18 to submit illustrated children’s picture books or short stories in English to their competition.

The theme of the contest was ‘Hope’ and out of the 178 entries received, 17 entries were shortlisted. Bangkok Prep’s two finalists Anchalina Sachdev and Seo-Yeon Lee, Year 6, were invited to a finalist’s workshop in March where professional writers and illustrators critiqued the student’s work.

After editing their book following the advice of professionals they resubmitted their entry hoping to win. On Saturday 10 June, Anchalina and Seo-Yeon attended the grand final of the writers awards. Anchalina and Seo-Yeon received first place for their children’s book ‘Hope’ in the 12 years and under picture book category for international schools.

Neilson Hays Library President Nalin Vanasin said, “This contest exceeded our expectations, not only in terms of the number of entries we received, but also in the levels of enthusiasm extended to us– from all the contestants who worked so hard to submit such quality works, and from the volunteers, judges and sponsors whose support and encouragement overwhelmed us. To all involved, we express our sincere thanks.”

The winning book ‘Hope’ will be available to read in the school’s digital library. Perhaps the first of many books by our winning Primary authors!
