CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Matters for a Modern World

Our world is a complex and evolving place. In the 21st Century, the requirements of a growing and ageing population will have significant impact on society. With global population expected to reach 8.5 bn by 2030 and 11.2 bn by the end of the century, demand on resources such as water, energy, food and raw materials will be greater than anything we have experienced. How do we meet the expectations of a modernised, global society whilst minimising the impact we have on our environment?1

Chemical engineering benefits society and the environment by combining science and mathematics to develop new and sustainable technologies, processes and products. Chemical engineers can make an impact by tackling important societal challenges and improving quality of life. They can have a role in recovering valuable materials and energy from waste, developing and delivering food, or improving healthcare and chemical product. It this presentation, we will explore how chemical engineering can make an impact and positive contribution to the world by addressing four key challenge areas confronting society: Water, Energy, Food & Nutrition and Health & Well-being.
