Letter from the Head of Secondary – 12 May 2017

By Head of Secondary Nigel Wilsonlock

May is our community-minded month for life values and we will be proudly coming together on May 30th to celebrate the Graduation of our current 33 Y13 students who will become ‘graduands’ for the day. We have a very important visitor lined up to be our guest of honour and speaker!

This is a bittersweet event as we celebrate the successes of our oldest students whilst acknowledging that they are now ready to leave us and take their place in the world as independent adults, many at prestigious universities across the globe. If we have been successful as a learning community they will seamlessly enter this next chapter of their lives. We will wish them well and “Bon voyage!” Many may have a tear in their eyes.

We have two FOBISIA trips at this time of the year; Y7/8 Maths is in Beijing whilst the Orchestra will shortly be off to Kuala Lumpur. FOBISIA is very important to us as a school as it is extends our community across Asia with other like-minded British International Schools.

For those in the know, membership is also a badge of quality that we wear with pride alongside CIS (Council of International Schools). These extended communities ensure we uphold the highest of standards so that parents and students are assured of the quality of their schools.

Although a big focus this term is inevitably the exciting move to our new campus at T77, we will take the time to celebrate student successes in our award ceremonies. We have spent some-time reviewing our procedures over the year and have separated out the KS3, KS4 and Sixth Form awards into two ceremonies, whilst the Sports Awards will be next week.

As we have grown this has been necessary, so that students feel valued and honoured by all parts of the community  Staff are currently reviewing student performances to see who will be receiving awards in our key areas of:

  • Academic Achievement
  • Academic Progress
  • Attitude: Effort
  • Attitude: Life Values and
  • Leadership

Finally, over the weekend we have a Google Bootcamp underway for about 15 of our staff and 35 other teachers from across the region.

I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing of their new found skills in the weeks to come. For a school to be successful we need all our community learning! Good luck to all attendees.

Have a restful and ‘learning filled’ weekend.
