Letter from the Head of School – 26 May 2017

By Head of School Valerie Thomas-Peter

Between now and the end of the school year I will be giving you details of the new staff who will be joining us in August 2017.

Some of the posts are replacements for teachers who are leaving us this summer but 6 are additional teachers (3 each in the Primary and Secondary Schools) who are filling newly created positions.

I hope you enjoyed reading the bios last week– here are a few more to read (Secondary in alphabetical order this time).

We are all eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new teachers in early August and looking forward to welcoming them to the ‘Bangkok Prep family’!  I will publish more bios from our new teachers next week.

William Holt – English Teacher

Having previously lived in Thailand for three years, I am really looking forward to immersing myself back into the wonderful culture. I count myself extremely lucky to be living in such a beautiful country, which, undoubtedly, is home to the best food in the world.

I have a wealth of teaching experience in a range of different countries and cannot wait to join the English Department at Bangkok Prep Secondary. Being an English teacher, I have a great affiliation with reading and I am eager to share this passion with my students. In addition, my other great love is football and hope to be an active participant in the school’s football teams.

Claire Hullock – Drama Teacher

I hold Bachelor of Arts degree from Leeds University and a PGCE in Drama from Leeds University. Going into my twelfth year of teaching I knew I wanted to work at a great school and I am excited to begin my journey at Bangkok Prep this year, especially in the brand new building.

I am passionate about travel and exploring new cultures and I have been working internationally for the past six years, two in Australia and two in Indonesia, and the last two in Thailand. Thailand has, by far, been my favourite place to live and visit. I am very much looking forward to move to Bangkok to explore the various restaurants, cafes, arts and culture that the city has.

I am passionate about all aspects of performing arts and have also studied dance. I hold IDTA and UKPA qualifications in Ballroom and Latin, Freestyle and choreography. I hope to share my enthusiasm for all things drama and dance with students, staff, and parents in the Bangkok Prep community and beyond.

Mark Hunter – Faculty Leader – Science

Hello, I’m Mark Hunter and I am very pleased to be joining the staff, students and wider community at Bangkok Prep in August. I will be coming with my wife and two children, Caitlin (starting Year 12) and Eddie (starting Year 10).

My teaching and leadership experience has most recently been in the Middle East, at schools in Qatar and Dubai, but prior to that I alternated between schools in London, Kenya, London (again), Malaysia and Bristol.

I’d like to say I’d carefully planned a career that gave me a full range of school experiences with both UK and overseas phases, but the truth is that I have been fortunate to have secured positions based simply on personal interest and new challenges over any kind of carefully plotted route or grand plan, and I hope that each one has equipped me further for the next.

I recognise the value of much of the practice and initiative that has come out of the UK in recent years and welcome any opportunity that allows the very best elements of teaching and learning and leadership to be introduced into an international environment.

Bangkok Prep is transitioning through an exciting period of growth and development by establishing a second campus in the city and I relish the prospect of joining the staff on this journey.

Outside teaching my interests include most sports but rugby in particular, hiking, camping and exploring the outdoor environment, SCUBA, photography, travel (obviously) and food (both cooking and eating!). As an aside – I am also very happy to be returning to South East Asia this year. I have lived in Malaysia and visited Thailand a number of times with my family and we have many wonderful memories of our experiences there.

Lee Mortiboys – Faculty Leader – World Languages

I have been teaching for more than two decades in a variety of schools in London, the West Midlands, Singapore and Manila. I have been fortunate to acquire invaluable in-sights into successful pedagogy and excellent school leadership in a range of schools in very different contexts. I am very committed to public service and have undertaken a great deal of voluntary work in the UK and overseas.

I am a devoted fan of musical theatre and always enjoy an evening at the theatre in London’s West End. Les Miserables and Miss Saigon still remain my favourite productions.

An avid Aston Villa supporter and a keen Warwickshire Country Cricket fan, I enjoy spending an afternoon or evening at Villa Park or Edgbaston Cricket ground.

Travelling and theatre have ignited a passion for History, an interest that has really developed in my adult life. I am equally fascinated by politics. Usually, I divide my reading time between books on politics or history, although I do enjoy a good crime thriller written by the likes of Lee Child or Patricia Cornwell.

I love exploring beautiful, fascinating cities. I have been fortunate to have visited many wonderful cities over the last two decades, however, London, Paris and Amsterdam still remain personal favourites.

I spent six very memorable years in the lovely city of Singapore and I am sure that Bangkok will become another one of my favourite cities. I am really looking forward to learning more about pedagogy and leadership as well as enhancing my skills set at Bangkok Prep.
