Letter from the Head of School – 2 June 2017

By Head of School Valerie Thomas-Peter

It is quite hard to believe that we are coming to the end of the academic year already – and what a year it has been! Our ‘end of year’ events will continue right until the very last day of term and we are making the most of the all available opportunities to reflect on the achievements of our students and to celebrate the highlights of the year. The publication of our Year Book 2016-17 will capture this beautifully in print and I hope that you will enjoy reading it over the summer break.

This is a ‘bittersweet’ time of year as we not only celebrate all that has been achieved during the year but also say goodbye to a cohort of Year 13 students who have become very dear to our school community. I have been very pleased to be involved in the ‘end of year’ celebrations to date which have re-emphasised the high calibre and achievements of our students at the Bangkok Prep.

The Graduation Ceremony held on Tuesday 30th May was a magnificent occasion (despite the rain) and highlighted all of the best qualities of our students. My thanks go to His Excellency Mr Brian Davidson, the British Ambassador for attending the Graduation as our keynote speaker and my congratulations go to everyone who was involved in the organisation of this event.

Finally this week, below please find some more of the bios of new teachers who are joining us next year. I will share further bios with you next week.

Have a lovely weekend!

Andrew Morton – Faculty Leader – Humanities

My name is Andy, and I have worked for the past few years in London in one of the UK’s leading academies and have previous experience of teaching in Thailand, working at a Thai government school in Isan. I will be joining the Bangkok Prep community as Faculty Leader of Humanities and I am really looking forward to delivering such an important and interesting part of education in a diverse and stimulating environment. I love to explore new places and try new things and I am very excited to start living and working in one of the most exciting locations in the world.

Andrew Pybus – Art/D&T Teacher

I have been working in a number of schools both internationally and in London, 15 years of which have been spent in Asia including a 10 years posting in Hong Kong as the Head of Art, Design, ICT and Technology faculties.

I am interested in all things ‘Design’ and have a love of anything technological with a particular interest in 2-D, 3-D CAD and CAM and freelance design. I also write educational materials to promote the value of design thinking as a tool for problem solving and have won many awards for delivering IGCSE and IB design technology courses.

Outside of the classroom my interests include travel, rock climbing, cycling, squash, swimming and reading and most recently scuba diving, which I find is great opportunity to think quietly away from the joys of noisy family life. I have also helped run a number of scuba diving courses for students’ aged 12-18.

I have always been heavily involved in the extra-curricular life of the schools I have worked at and have coached a number of sports including cricket, football and golf. I have also developed and participated in national and international competitions including Young Engineers and WISE. My most recent club has involved 2 and 3D CAD clubs that were very successful and extremely popular.

As a keen (but poor) musician I often involve myself in staff bands and musical activities, something I hope to continue at Bangkok Prep.

Alison Turnbull – Counsellor

Hello! My name is Alison Turnbull and I am delighted to be joining Bangkok Prep for the next academic year. After working in the Middle East for the past 11 years I am really looking forward to moving to Thailand. I shall be moving with family.  Over the past years I have worked in Malaysia, the UK, Qatar and more recently Dubai.

Christine Benjamin – Primary EAL

My name is Christine and I am very excited to be joining the Bangkok Prep community this August as a Primary EAL teacher. Born and bred in sunny Singapore, I first developed a love for teaching as an undergraduate while working in the Singapore Night Safari speaking about wildlife and conservation issues. After graduation, I taught children and youth with special educational needs in a not-for-profit school. Three years later, I made my move to Bangkok and have been thoroughly enjoying my time teaching EAL to both primary and secondary students from across the world over the last two years.

A sociology graduate, I enjoy learning about different cultures and have a keen interest in languages and am currently trying hard to improve my Thai skills. When I am not teaching, I like exploring new places in and out of Bangkok, discovering new local food and I truly look forward to continuing this adventure in this amazing bustling city!

Chris Duffin – Primary – Key Stage 2 Teacher

Hello, my name is Chris Duffin and I am incredibly excited about the prospect of working at Bangkok Prep. I am well aware of the prestigious reputation the school has built up over the years. I am from London where I studied at the University of Greenwich for a degree in Education Studies, after which I gained qualified teacher status and taught Year 4 in a school in Southeast London. I love living in Thailand as it is such a vibrant country with amazing food. Food is a major part of my life as is football, golf and travelling. I regularly play football and golf as well as practicing yoga. I look forward to working as part of the Bangkok Prep community.
